Job Description:

Budget Title: Academic Advisor (SL-3)

Salary: $41,155

Advise students with different curricular needs considering law as a profession, while working closely with faculty and staff in a busy, collaborative academic advising office.  Provide information about undergraduate curriculum offerings associated with or preparatory to the study of law, law school program, admissions standards and procedures and LSAT testing.  Participate in new student orientation and recruitment events. 

Identify and initiate programs to assist students in their decision to pursue a legal education.  Maintain campus contact with pre-law student groups and with the faculty who assist them.  Facilitate workshops and other student outreach opportunities.  Maintain a current pre-law library.  Develop and maintain a network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources.  Maintain contact with pre-law advisors at other institutions and law school admissions offices.  Write dean's letters of recommendation. Process bar statements.  Collect law school admission data on Binghamton University graduates.  Occasional evening and weekend hours required.

Requirements:

Masters degree or significant pre-law advising experience required (minimum of Bachelors degree required).  Also required are a minimum of two years professional experience in higher education; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; superior public speaking and presentation skills; ability to manage diverse responsibilities within the context of diplomacy and good judgement; respect for confidentiality; and sensitivity to diverse socioeconomic, cultural and developmental needs. 

Preferred qualifications include:

Masters, Ph.D. or J.D.

Experience in academic advising, academic affairs, student affairs or student life

Fundamental (or basic) computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel).  Knowledge of BANNER helpful.
