Job Description:

Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant  (SL-3)

Salary: $44,000 minimum, dependent upon experience

The campus job title and salary for this position will depend upon the experience of the candidate.  The International Student Advisor/Assistant Director will be part of a busy, creative office committed to providing quality services and programs to more than 2,100 international students and scholars from 90 countries.   The International Student Advisor/Assistant Director has the following responsibilities:

Regulatory

Designated School Official (DSO) certification through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; F-1 and J-1 records monitoring for regulatory compliance; advising international students on a variety of regulatory matters; review and approval of applications for employment authorization; review and approval of dependent visa documents; review and approval of federally-required form letters.

Programming

In coordination with others, shared responsibilities for planning and implementing two yearly international student orientations and conducting employment workshops.

This position reports to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services, part of the Division of Student Affairs.

 

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree, along with at least one year of relevant professional experience.  Ability to use and understand database tools for record creation, edits and updates.  Ability to communicate through oral, electronic and print media.  Candidates must be creative, energetic, well-organized, task-oriented and articulate, and have excellent oral communication, writing and computer skills.   Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and coordinate multiple tasks and priorities required; also must work well with individuals of diverse languages, cultures, and ethnic groups.  Candidates must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents because performance of the immigration regulatory responsibilities of this position requires eligibility for designation as a signatory for certain U.S. federal documents.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree and at least two to three years of progressive professional experience in an international student office at a U.S. college or university.  Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) and familiarity with SEVIS rules and federal regulations governing F and J students.  Previous experience working with volunteers, international students and scholars is highly desirable, as well as an understanding of world events and their impact on global interactions.
